VIÑA DEL MAR UNIVERSITY is located in the metropolitan area that is composed of the cities of Valparaíso and Viña del Mar. This metropolitan area is the second largest urban center in Chile, with an approximate population of 600,000. Founded November 21, 1988, Viña del Mar University (UVM) is a private institution of higher education and part of the selected Chilean universities that have been accredited by the Chile Ministry of Education, which certifies the quality of higher education institutions and assures the completion of optimal academic standards. Viña del Mar University has a modern campus located in the higher part of the city and has characteristics and dimensions similar to some of the most important higher education centers in Europe and North America.
The UNIVERSIDAD VIÑA DEL MAR through the INTERNATIONAL OFFICE OIIE-UVM offers a wide range of study programs for undergraduate students. As an official DELE (Spanish as a second language diploma) examination center, international students can participate in traditional programs such as semester and year-long study programs as well as summer and winter short term programs. UVM also offers nontraditional programs such as short term specialized programs and GAP programs. Along with these programs, the International Office at Viña del Mar University has four centers where students can take specialized courses. Intensive Spanish courses for nonnative Spanish students are given through the Center for Spanish as a Second Language. The Center for Business Studies offers Global Business courses taught in English. Ethnic studies can be taken at the Center for Contemporary Latin American Studies and Research. Students interested in gaining an international experience can participate in international internships through the Center for Global Workforce Development.
